Things to Pay Attention Before Laying Gabion Nets

Aug. 28, 2021

Gabions are rectangular cages made of hexagonal double-twist wire mesh filled with appropriately sized rock or quarry stone. Here metal wire mesh manufacturer GOLDFLOWER shows you the brief introduction of the gabions.

GABION WIRE MESH

Description

Gabions are rectangular baskets made of hexagonal mesh of heavy galvanized steel wire. The baskets are filled with rocks and stacked on top of each other to form a gravity-fed wall. Gabions rely primarily on the interlocking of individual stones and rocks within the wire mesh for internal stability, and their mass or weight to resist hydraulic and earth forces.

Advantages

Easy to handle and transport

Speed of construction

Flexibility (gabions allow movement)

Water permeability (good drainage)

Reduce water velocity and protect slopes from erosion.

Applicability

Gabions are used to slow down concentrated runoff or to stabilize slopes with seepage problems and/or non-cohesive soils. Gabions can be used at the soil-water interface where soil conditions, water turbulence, water velocity and expected vegetation cover make it possible for the soil to erode under the designed flow conditions. Gabions can be used on slopes that are steeper than rock throwing and are sometimes the only viable option for stabilizing areas that do not have enough space to accommodate "softer" vegetation solutions.

Plan to lay

For ease of handling and transportation, gabions are provided folded flat and tied together. The gabions can be easily assembled by unfolding all vertical edges and binding them together and sewing a length of connecting wire around the vertical edges. Empty gabions are placed in place and attached to adjacent gabions. They are then filled to one-third of their depth with pebble-sized rocks. Connecting wires placed in each direction support the opposing gabion walls together. The metal wires prevent the gabion baskets from "swelling" when they are filled. Repeat this operation until the gabions are filled. After filling, the top is folded closed and attached to the ends, sides and diaphragm.

Maintenance

Gabions should be inspected regularly and after each major storm event. All temporary and permanent erosion and sediment control measures shall be maintained and repaired as needed to ensure continued performance of their intended function.
