Mesh Count

You will often see the U.S. standard mesh count used to describe mesh counts. The U.S. standard mesh count is the number of openings per inch of mesh. The higher the mesh count, the more openings per inch and the smaller the openings in the mesh. Convert the American Standard Mesh to microns, inches and millimeters.

Mesh Size

The mesh size is the actual size of the openings in the mesh. This is usually given in fractions of inches and millimeters and/or microns. A micron (μm) is one thousandth of a millimeter or twenty-five thousandths of an inch.

Strand Diameter

The description of the mesh includes the diameter of the strands used for weaving. A mesh made with the same mesh count but with thicker strands will have a smaller mesh opening.

When considering filters, you need to keep the following points in mind as it relates to selecting the right in-line filter for your application.

A mesh is a surface filter that can be cleaned by backwashing.

Mesh is made of a variety of metals, metal alloys and plastics.

Mesh is not the number of mesh. It is the number of openings per inch.

Mesh size (pore size) is usually given in inches and fractions of millimeters and/or microns.

The filament diameter affects the mesh size and the percentage of open area.

The higher the open area percentage of the mesh, the more flow the mesh can handle.
